Not to mention these episodes were released in 2005, not long after 9/11, in an America where xenophobia towards the middle east had grown. Duvet is a wonderful slightly mournful pop song that works perfectly as the opening theme for the anime Serial Experiments Lain. Although this is meant to mock Stan’s conservatism as hypocritical in his passion for America, and criticize that he is not truly American, it paints a stereoptypical image of people of the Middle East as morally underdeveloped and misogynist. Stan prefers it there for the patriarchal culture that leaves him in charge, and disempowers his wife Francine. Upon moving to Saudi Arabia for what is supposed to be a brief time, Stan, to the dismay of Francine, decides he prefers living there. We also see homage’s to a 50s-60s style American nuclear family. Early in the first episode, Stan sings about wanting a traditional nuclear family where he is completely in charge, and is completely respected. This characterizes how Saudi Arabia is depicted in the episodes Stan of Arabia Part 1 & 2. People, with good reason were offended by the characterization of Arabic people, countries, and culture as violent in Aladdin’s opening song, “Arabian Nights”. They also shelter an extraterrestrial named Roger, and talking fish named Klaus. Toei Animation has aired three episodes so far. The show focuses on a nuclear family composed of by staunch conservative CIA agent Stan Smith, housewife Francine Smith, and their children Hayley and Steve. Seth MacFarlane’s American Dad! (2005- Ongoing) is an animated television sitcom that continues the problematic orientalism showcased in Aladdin. It extends beyond children and family entertainment. Furthermore, the main inspiration for Agrabah, a fictitious Middle Eastern city that is made-up by Americans, was past Western depictions of the Middle-East. In Leslie Felperin’s article “The Thief of Buena Vista: Disney’s Aladdin and Orientalism”, Felperin examines that problematic depictions of race and culture outside of America have continued, as can be seen in Aladdin, where villains and background characters outside of Aladdin show to be racist caricatures. It is even imbedded in ubiquitous characters that continue to entertain children, such as Mickey Mouse, who resembles and is inspired by black face in cinema. The background music is called Duvet, from the ba, a band from British.HD. Early examples include images of minstrel show in Disney’s Alice Comedies and Hanna-Barbera’s early Tom and Jerry cartoons. This is the opening of the new Blu-ray version of the anime 'Serial Experiments Lain' released a few days ago. In their book Racism in Popular Media: From Aunt Jemima to Frito Bandito (2015), Behnken and Smithers go over the history of racism in animation, proving it has long been a pedagogical problem for children.
